On the road to Hill End

I'm in a packing frenzy getting ready for my artist in residence at Haefliger's cottage in Hill End. So looking forward to a month of focused work in a different environment.

If you are in the Bathurst region on Sunday 16th September, please come along to The Hill End Artists Open Studio Day. Many of the Hill End resident artists will have their studios open on the day along with the two residency cottages managed by BRAG. You can read more information here.
Hill End has a long and rich history, from gold mining town to artists haven, and although many people I have spoken to are unfamiliar with the name Hill End, they tend to recognise many of the iconic Australian paintings from the late 1940's which feature the town. I'm excited to see what I find in this place, which will be very different to the coastal environments I have focused on for the past few years.

The Hill End Artists in Residence Program aims to provide an opportunity for creative development and is managed by Bathurst Regional Art Gallery in partnership with the Parks Services Division, Department of Environment and Climate Change. The program receives funding support from the NSW Ministry for the Arts. Geelong Contemporary Art Prize

'In the hush of morning mist - Dove Lake (Cradle Mountain)' has been shortlisted for the Geelong Contemporary Art Prize 2012 (formerly known as the Fletcher Jones art prize).
The Geelong Contemporary Art Prize is an acquisitive painting prize conducted by Geelong Gallery on a biennial basis. The exhibition of finalist's work will be on show from 15th September to 18th November 2012. This year the event is generously sponsored by the Dimmick Charitable Trust. I am thrilled to be participating in the exhibition.

This painting is from a series I have been working on for the past few months, featuring my experiences of the World Heritage listed environment of Cradle Mountain National Park (You can see earlier posts of our walks here, here and here). The completed paintings will be presented in my upcoming solo exhibition - 'Breathing in Mountains',  at Salt Contemporary Art, Queenscliff, opening on 23rd November.

The Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize 2012

Last month I headed down to Adelaide to see the finalists work including my piece - 'Life on the Edge - High Tide', which was shortlisted for the Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize, 2012. There were as expected, many high quality artworks in the show across a broad range of mediums and processes. I spent a couple of hours looking at all the works, each presented beautifully in the exhibition rooms of the South Australian Museum, it was well worth the trip to see them all in the flesh.

The Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize is Australia’s richest prize for natural history art. The exhibition is on display at the South Australian Museum from 21st July to 9th September 2012.
