Con/struct at Caboolture Regional Art Gallery

Last weekend I headed along to the opening of Con/struct at Caboolture Regional Art Gallery. The exhibition is a celebration of Queensland Sculpture, featuring eleven artists who have a sustained practice in the sculpture realm.
Three of the artists gave talks prior to the official opening, providing interesting insight to their conceptual enquiries and process. A highlight of the show, for me, is the diversity of material and process utilised by the artists; with tactile qualities of organic materials and forms such as tree trunk and horn, ranging through to industrial products such as mdf and glossy laminate utilised in clean lines and planes of design aesthetic.

One work in particular had my attention, partly because I had seen it before in another location. Daniel Templeman's sculpture titled 'Four Rings'; was exhibited at Spiro Grace Art Rooms in 2013 where it occupied the volume of the room. My experience then was a sense of stepping into a space within the artwork. On show at Caboolture Regional Art Gallery, the same work was sited within 4 metre high gallery walls with expansive space surrounding. The tension of the sculpture sitting on the floor became more apparent, along with beautiful shadow lines. I'm sure sculptors are well aware of their work having a different presence in various locations, I was conscious of my experience and perception of a work being quite different.

Artists in Con/struct include - Lincoln Austin, Eleanor and James Avery, Laurindo De Abreu Soto, Simone Eisler, Jason Fitzgerald, Hew Chee Fong, Stephen Hart, Stephen Newton, Charles Robb and Daniel Templeman.
Con/struct is on show until 11th April, 2015. Further artist talks and a panel discussion are scheduled during February and March, details here.

Scientia at Art Est. Gallery

A couple of my paper cut works are in the exhibition Scientia, curated by Lisa Woolfe and presented by Art Est. Gallery, in conjunction with Art Month Sydney and LOST (Leichhardt Open Studio Trail).
I'm looking forward to seeing the show which features seven artists whose practice is informed by one or more of the sciences. The works I have included were developed in response to a month long residency at BigCi in the Blue Mountains. Celebrating the biodiversity of flora and fauna in the World Heritage listed area; works combine elements of competing interests in the ecology - conservation, development and mineral resources.

Scientia runs from the 2nd to 31st March. If you are in the area on Saturday 14th March, please join us for drinks from 3-5pm. Look forward to seeing you if you can make it.
